Welcome to Safe Kids Tulsa’s “Safe Pools for Safe Kids” campaign web site!
Drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related accidental death among
children 14 and under in the U.S. and in Oklahoma. It’s the number one cause
of death among children one to four.
|
- 300 residential swimming pool drownings occur every year in the U.S. of children 14 and under.
- In 2003, there were 4,200 near-drownings recorded in the U.S. – not accurate because of emergency room coding discrepancies.
- In both drownings and near-drownings, most children had been missing from sight less than five minutes and were in the care of one or both parents.
- 600,000 new residential pool owners in the U.S. between 2002-2004.
