The Things You Need to Know…

In the Kitchen
Dangers: Fire, scalds, poisoning, choking and cuts

  • Post emergency numbers near phone.
  • Keep fire extinguisher handy.
  • Store knives and other sharp utensils in drawers with child safety locks.
  • Lock cleansers and vitamins out of children's reach.
  • Cook on back burners, and turn pot handles toward back of stove.
  • Install guards on stove knobs.

In the Family Room
Dangers: Fire, burns, falls and poisoning

  • Secure tall furniture to walls.
  • Keep poisonous plants out of children's reach.
  • Cushion sharp edges of furniture.
  • Install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Install covers on electrical outlets.
  • Tie up loose electrical cords.
  • Install and maintain working smoke detectors.
  • Install safety gates at both ends of staircase.

In the Bathroom
Dangers: Drowning, scalds, poisoning and falls

  • Keep first aid supplies, in a locked medicine cabinet. (When your pediatrician directs Ipecac Syrup for induced vomiting, give a one-ounce bottle to your child. Check expiration date and keep on hand. Caution: There are some poisonous materials that should not be vomited.)
  • Lock medicines, vitamins and cleaning supplies out of children's reach.
  • Place safety locks on toilet lids.
  • Turn children in tub away from faucet.
  • Supervise children at all times.
  • Set water heater temperature to 120 degrees or less.

In the Nursery
Dangers: Strangulation, suffocation, choking, falls

  • Place cord wind-ups on all blind and drapery cords.
  • Install window guards (except designated emergency exits).
  • Install and maintain a working smoke detector.
  • Remove all toys and pillows from crib.
  • Buy age-appropriate toys.
  • Use a crib without corner posts and make sure spacing between crib slats is less than 2-3/8".
  • Ensure crib side rail is locked.
  • Make sure children's pajamas are flame-resistant.

In the Garage
Check to make sure kerosene, gasoline and paints are out of your child's reach.

Once you have completely childproofed your home, get down on your hands and knees and crawl through your house. This is helpful in viewing things from a baby or toddler's perspective.

  • Oklahoma Poison Control Center - 1-800-522-4611. Call anytime someone has swallowed a poisonous substance. Pharmacists will tell you what to do.
  • Child Care Resource Center - 918-587-CARE (587-2273)
    MTWF 12-4 p.m.
    TH 4-8 p.m.
    Volunteers will help direct you in finding suitable childcare.
  • Write these numbers (as well as 911) and tape them to all phones, along with your pediatrician's phone number. Be sure to include your own address and phone number.
