Welcome to Safe Kids Tulsa’s “Walk This Way” campaign web site! Pedestrian injury remains the second leading cause of injury-related accidental death among children ages 5 to 14.
|
- In 2002, 599 children ages 14 and under died from pedestrian injuries.
- In 2003, nearly 38,400 children ages 14 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for pedestrians-related injuries.
- Child pedestrian injuries occur more often in residential areas and on local roads that are straight, paved and dry.
- Children ages 4 and under are at the greatest risk form child pedestrian death.

Safe Kids Worldwide and program sponsor FedEx Express created Safe Kids Walk
This Way to teach safe behavior to motorists and child pedestrians and create
safer, more walkable communities. Each October, coalitions in more than 100
U.S. cities host events on International Walk to School Day, as part of the
program. The program also supports Pedestrian Safety Task Forces which work
to create safer communities for child pedestrians by making environmental
improvements to high-risk locations. Additionally, Safe Kids conducts annual
research to reveal the problems for child pedestrians, raising national
awareness around this issue.
